HS VOLLEYBALL: Northern Cambria hands Rams first section loss

Northern Cambria improved to 7-1 and handed Ligonier Valley its first conference loss, winning 25-12, 25-22, 16-25, 25-22, in a Heritage Conference girls’ volleyball match Thursday in Northern Cambria.

“It was an exciting match,” Northern Cambria coach Mike Hogan said. “It’s nice because this sort of evens things up with us, Penns Manor and Ligonier Valley at the top of the conference.”

Penns Manor dealt Northern Cambria its lone conference loss earlier this month, while Ligonier Valley topped Penns Manor this week in three games.

Alyssa Walters paced Northern Cambria with 23 service points. Renee Paronish and Lakyn Fornari each had 11 kills.

Rachel Wallace led Ligonier Valley with 18 digs and seven service points. Madison McLaughlin had 10 kills, Becca Kromel added nine kills, and Emily Ulery chipped in seven service points.

Northern Cambria won the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-17.

Northern Cambria (7-1) plays host to Bishop Guilfoyle on Monday. Ligonier Valley welcomes Blairsville on Tuesday.

 

PENNS MANOR 3, BLAIRSVILLE 0: Penns Manor bounced back from its first loss by blanking Blairsville, 25-18, 25-13, 25-21, in a Heritage Conference match in Kenwood.

Sarah DaBella racked up 14 kills to lead Penns Manor. Mallory Drahnak had 27 assists, Mary Roach added eight kills, Heather Aikens tacked on five kills, and Taylor Rainey notched four blocks.

Penns Manor won the junior varsity match, 25-19, 25-20.

Penns Manor (7-1) travels to United on Tuesday.

 

PURCHASE LINE 3, UNITED 2: Purchase Line outlasted United, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12, in a Heritage Conference match in Armagh.

Jacelyn Fleming led Purchase Line with 16 kills and three blocks. Amy Elling added 31 assists, five kills and a block, Allison Goodlin had eight digs and five kills, and Anna Harkleroad tacked on 15 service points.

Hannah Stephens powered United with 21 assists. Halee Reasor had 13 kills, Mechin Flowers added nine kills, six blocks and five aces, Lyda Bartlebaugh chipped in 37 digs, and Morgan Cikowski tacked on 32 digs.

United won the junior varsity match, 25-17, 2-25, 16-14.

Both teams play at home Tuesday. Purchase Line (4-4) plays host to Homer-Center and United welcomes Penns Manor.

 

MARION CENTER 3, HOMER-CENTER 0: Marion Center swept visiting Homer-Center, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22, in a Heritage Conference match.

Morgan Glasser piled up 17 digs and seven kills to pace the Stingers. Mia Oterson had 23 assists, Chantel Glasser added six kills, and Sammi Frye amassed 11 digs.

Marion Center won the junior varsity match, 25-16, 24-26, 15-12.

Marion Center travels to Northern Cambria on Tuesday.

 

WEST SHAMOKIN 3, GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC 0: West Shamokin swept Greensburg 25-22, 25-17, 27-25, in a WPIAL Section 1-A match in Greensburg.

Amanda Wensel powered West Shamokin with 14 kills.

West Shamokin also won the junior varsity match, 2-1.

West Shamokin (6-1) plays host to Trinity Christian on Tuesday.
