Indiana County Transit Authority Executive Director John R. Kanyan has been elected to serve a two-year term on the State Association for Transportation Insurance’s Property and Liability Executive Board.
In that capacity, Kanyan said, he will help analyze insurance premium costs, review and renew insurance policies, and make financial decisions.
SAFTI provides an insurance fund for transportation agencies across the state.
Nominated by the association’s membership, Kanyan is serving a two-year term, which started last week.
His predecessor, Jerry Blair, was one of the founders of SAFTI.
“It just made me feel really good that they thought enough of me to put me in that position and that I was following in Jerry’s role,” he said.
Since its inception in 1994, Kanyan said, SAFTI has saved members hundreds of thousands of dollars in insurance premiums.
His SAFTI involvement, he said, is also good for the ICTA.
“With me being so involved in this, it certainly puts IndiGO on the cutting edge of insurance things that are coming down and all the new regulations,” he said.
Kanyan previously served for about four years on SAFTI’s risk control committee.
He is also treasurer of the Pennsylvania Public Transportation Association and chairman of PENN-Train.
