A former special-education teacher at SCI Pine Grove and her boyfriend were found shot dead in their Johnstown home on Wednesday night.

According to Cambria County Chief Deputy Coroner Jeffrey Lees, the couple, Alicia J. Welborn, 35, formerly of Clymer, and Kevin L. Burt, 33, suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Lees said authorities were summoned to their home at 145 Benshoff St. by a friend who had gone to check on the couple because he had been unable to reach them during the day.

Lees pronounced Welborn and Burt dead at the scene at 10:18 p.m. He said they were found on the first floor of their home. Each had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, he said.

Citing the ongoing investigating, Lees declined to provide other details, including the time he believed the shootings occurred.

Autopsies were conducted Thursday at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. Their deaths were each ruled a homicide.

Lees said Welborn and Burt each died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Police have released little information about the killings, and Johnstown police Chief Craig Foust did not return a phone call seeking comment.

However, police have made one incidental arrest through the investigation — officers charged Justin Turner, 24, of Johnstown, with possession with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance.

The Tribune-Democrat newspaper and WJAC-TV in Johnstown reported that Turner was the friend who had gone to check on the couple.

According to the reports, police, upon questioning Turner, found that he was in possession of nine baggies of what they believe to be marijuana. However, Turner is not a suspect in the shootings, according to the reports.

On Tuesday, Welborn appeared before District Judge George Thachik for a preliminary hearing on accusations that she had been having a sexual relationship with an SCI Pine Grove inmate who was a tutor in her classroom.

Welborn waived her hearing. Prosecutors had offered her a plea bargain, but she hadn’t yet accepted it.

Johnstown police are continuing to investigate.
