MARION CENTER — Marion Center beat United behind a strong running game and a stout defense that forced three turnovers to keep the Lions winless in a Heritage Conference game Friday night.

The Stingers racked up 222 yards rushing, with Thad Welch leading all rushers with 73 yards on nine carries, including a 43-yard run that put the Stingers on the board first with 2:39 left in the first quarter.

Colton Fairman chipped in with 63 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries, while Zack Edwards and Blake Orr each finished with 46 yards rushing.

Orr also added 99 yards passing, completing 5 of 12 passes, with all five completions going to different receivers.

Brent Mack, Troy Mack and Tyler Mack combined for 135 of their team’s 151 rushing yards. Tyler Mack had a team-high 62 yards on 11 carries.

Matt Dill completed 2 of 7 passes for 42 yards but threw a costly interception to Marion Center’s Jake Bothell, who returned it 30 yards to put the Stingers in scoring position.

Freshman Jesse Beacker took over for Dill and completed 2 of 7 passes for 16 yards, including a 10-yard strike to Weylon McGeary to cap the scoring for the Lions.
