HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: Punxsutawney runners claim district titles
RIDGWAY — Bo Dinger and Juliann Boddorf breezed to individual titles at the District 9 Class AA cross country championships Saturday, and Dinger’s effort led the Punxsutawney boys to their second straight team title.
Dinger, a junior who last month won the IUP Crimson Hawk Invitational, took the District 9 title with a time of 17 minutes, 28.7 seconds. He finished more than 30 seconds ahead of Clearfield’s Alec Freeman.
Seth Burkett also posted a top-five finish for Punxsutawney, placing fourth in 18:11.0. The rest of the Chucks’ point scorers crossed the finish line in a pack, with Matthew Burke taking ninth (18:46.0), Eric Ingros 10th (18:47.2) and Jerad Meterko 11th (19:00.5).
Punxsutawney won the team title with 35 points, nine points ahead of Bradford.
As a district champion, all of Punxsutawney’s runners qualified for this weekend’s state meet. In addition to Dinger, Burkett, Burke, Ingros and Meterko, also making the trip to the PIAA Championships in Hershey on Saturday will be Brady Young, Luke Fugate and Zach Moore.
Boddorf raced to the District 9 girls’ title with a time of 20:19.30, crossing the finish line 20 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
However, Boddorf’s winning effort wasn’t good enough to give the Punxsutawney girls their second straight team title. The Chucks took second and finished three points behind Bradford.
Ala Small placed fourth with a time of 20:46.6 to also qualify for the PIAA Championships.
