HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: Marion Center's Fulton paces area runners at PIAA Championships
Marion Center senior Hannah Fulton and fierce rival Heather Paynter, of Homer-Center, both barely missed out on medals at the PIAA cross country championships in Hershey on Saturday. Fulton finished 30th in the Class A girls’ race with a time of 20 minutes, 46 seconds, and Paynter was right behind her, with a 31st-place finish and an identical time of 20:46.
The top 25 finishers earn medals. Paynter medaled last season as a sophomore.
Other local girls who competed were: Northern Cambria’s Allyson Kopera (74th, 21:40); Marion Center freshman Taya Whitfield (81st, 21:52); and United’s Ryleigh Ludwig (82nd; 21:52).
Indiana’s Kacey Raible finished 68th (20:49) on the Class AA side.
Penns Manor senior J.T. Horwat placed 58th in the boys’ Class A race to lead the area boys. Making his second trip to the state championships, Horwat covered the 5K course in 17:53 to lead the local contingent.
Purchase Line’s Dan Learn was the next closest local finisher, taking 147th place in 19:13. Blairsville seniors Ryan and Alex Horchar and junior Derek Rocks finished 177th, 178th and 180th, respectively.
Meanwhile, on the Class AA side, senior Ryan Louther placed 65th to lead a trio of Indiana runners. Adam Lenze was 68th, and Sam Lenze was 104th.
