IUP ROUNDUP: Field hockey team ousted from PSAC playoffs
November 06, 2013 10:20 AM

The IUP field hockey season came to an end Tuesday with the Crimson Hawks’ 2-0 loss to host Bloomsburg in the quarterfinal-round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs.

The Crimson Hawks ended their season with an 8-11 overall record. They started the year 1-6, but a late-season charge during which they won five of their last six games — including a 1-0 upset win over No. 2 playoff seed Millersville — propelled them into the conference playoffs.

The Huskies took the lead with less than five minutes to go in the first half when Samantha Facciolla charged down the middle and passed it to Laura Gerhard, who converted the opportunity for a 1-0 lead.

IUP missed a good chance to tie less than two minutes into the second half when a shot by Kendra Blantz got past Bloomsburg goalie Megan Eppley but was saved by defender Gabby Nisiotis. The Crimson Hawks had another chance just seconds later with a penalty stroke, but Casey McGowan’s attempt was saved by Eppley and Bloomsburg escaped unscathed.

The Huskies tacked on an insurance goal with less than 12 minutes to go when Sam Peters deflected one in after three Bloomsburg penalty corners in three minutes.

Bloomsburg held an 8-3 advantage in shots. The Huskies also had eight penalty corners compared to IUP’s four.

Darian Shuker went the distance in goal for the Crimson Hawks and made two saves.

VOLLEYBALL: IUP lost to PSAC-leading Clarion, 25-20, 25-16, 25-13, in a PSAC West match Tuesday evening.

The Crimson Hawks were coming off a 3-2 comeback victory over Seton Hill and had won seven of their past nine contests.

In the first set, IUP kept up, never allowing more than a seven-point lead. With Clarion leading 21-14 late in the set, the Crimson Hawks stormed back, scoring six of the next nine points to get within 24-20, but the Golden Eagles closed out the set on the next point.

First-place Clarion (28-2) showed its dominance in the second set, going on a 7-1 run to take a 12-6 lead early.

After an IUP timeout, the Hawks scored seven of the next 10 points and pulled within 15-13, but Clarion ended the set on a 10-3 run.

In the third set, Bloomsburg went on a 7-0 run to take an early 12-4 lead and never gave IUP a chance to storm back as the Crimson Hawks did in Saturday’s win over Seton Hill.

Lisa Kissell finished with seven kills to lead IUP, and Steph Kruzynski added six kills.

IUP (11-19, 7-11 PSAC) welcomes Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. Friday at the KCAC.
