4-H members honored at celebration

About 700 Indiana County 4-H members were recently honored for their accomplishments and leadership activities at the Indiana County 4-H Achievement Celebration.

More than 150 people attended the event at the Penn Run Outreach Center.

The Outstanding Senior Members for 2013 are Abby Zyhowski and Nichele Olson, both of the Marion Center Handy Helpers, with honorable mention going to Paige Henry, Trailblazers; Jesse Isenberg, Gordon; Mary Ann Ostach, Faithful Furry Faces; Alexis Elgin, Bunny Bunch; and Marshall Richardson, Marion Center Handy Helpers.

Abigail Bruner, Gordon, was named Outstanding Junior Member. Honorable mention junior members are Elizabeth Bruner, Gordon; Natalie Pavlik, Bunny Bunch; Dragon Powell, Marion Center Handy Helpers; and Ashton Stiles, Southern Dairy.

In project area competition, Outstanding Members were Lauren Overdorff, Shawnee Riders, senior horse; Haley Brooks, Sleepy Hollow, junior horse; Jesse Isenberg, Gordon, senior livestock; Mariah Edgell, Northern Livestock, junior livestock; Elizabeth Buchanan, Great Egg-spectations, small animal; Alexis McConnell, Gordon, engineering; Caleb Brady and Thomas Brady, Marion Center Handy Helpers, and Jesse Isenberg, Gordon, conservation; Marshall Richardson, Marion Center Handy Helpers, family living; Teresa Shields, Gordon, horticulture; Aidan Cattau, Northern Dairy, dairy; and Brett Abrams, Northern Dairy, most motivated dairy member.

Those receiving an honorable mention in these areas included

Small animal: Elizabeth Bruner, Faithful Furry Faces; Natalie Pavlik, Bunny Bunch; and Dragon Powell and Marshall Richardson, Great Egg-spectations.

Junior livestock: Elizabeth Bruner, Gordon.

Senior livestock: Kaitlyn Glatt and Alexandra Swauger, Northern Livestock.

Engineering: Brayden Spencer, Marion Center Handy Helpers.

Junior horse: Paige Almes, Trailblazers, and Alexis Zaragoza, Shawnee Riders.

Horticulture: Elizabeth Bruner, Gordon.

Family living: Abigail Bruner and Elizabeth Bruner, Gordon.

There was a special awards program that honored outstanding club officers. Winners were Alexis Elgin, Bunny Bunch, president; Rachel Sproat, Trailblazers, vice president; Katelyn Kennedy, Marion Center Handy Helpers, secretary; Jesse Isenberg, Gordon, treasurer; Tanner Berringer, Treasure Seekers, and Ashley Goodlin, Green Clover, news reporters; and Andrea Davis, Gordon, and Andrew Rhea, Treasure Seekers, social chairmen.

The 2014 4-H Ambassadors are Mary Ann Ostach, Faithful Furry Faces; Jesse Isenberg, Gordon; and Alexis Elgin, Bunny Bunch.

Three county members were honored with the Conte Organic Awards. This award was established by county resident Beth Marshall to honor her late mother and is designed to recognize youth doing work with 4-H projects that employ organic principles. Alexis Elgin, Bunny Bunch, was named the winner in the contest, and will receive $300 as well as a trip to the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture Conference in State College. Elizabeth Bruner, Gordon, placed second and will receive $150. Aurora Buterbaugh, Northern Livestock, received third and will receive $100.

Abby Zyhoswki was recognized for completing a Teen Leader project.

Three current or former 4-H members were honored with education incentive grants: Joshua Jones, Abby Zyhowski and Nichele Olson.

Donors for the evening were Indiana Kiwanis, Robert Mikesell Sr., Horses and Hounds, Dairy Farmers of America, AgChoice Farm Credit; Windy View Farm, Green Clover Club, Walter and Eleanor Gallati (in memory of Helen Bencic); and Ted Kuckuck of Conemaugh Valley Ag Products.

Nichele Olson and Paige Henry shared their experiences about the National 4-H Congress, and leader Debbie Beisel and members of the state forestry team talked about the national forestry contest. They all received citations from state Sen. Don White for winning the national event. Rachel Sproat gave the invocation, and pledges were led by Sam McGaughran and John Clark Bruner. “Helping Hands” awards were given to Katelynn Ghiardi, Cory and Stephen Campbell, Daniel and Michaela Bush, and Matthew and Jason Edmiston. The Indiana County 4-H Program, Carol and Gene Schurman, Bertha Ackerson, Don and Kitty Eget, and Lori Richardson donated door prizes for the event.
