Three books filled with great writing

Three big new collections are filled to bursting with wonderful writing.

“The Most of Nora Ephron” (Knopf) is a posthumous collection of examples of just about everything the witty, wise Ephron wrote: a novel (Heartburn), a screenplay (When Harry Met Sally) and lots of her terrific essays and journalism.

“The Oxford Book of American Short Stories,” Second Edition (Oxford University Press), edited by Joyce Carol Oates, is a feast of great short fiction, from Washington Irving and Nathaniel Hawthorne through Ernest Hemingway and Flannery O’Connor and James Baldwin to Jhumpa Lahiri and Junot Diaz.

“T.C. Boyle: Stories II” (Viking) is another banquet of short fiction, this one all from one wildly inventive, wide-ranging author; it includes 44 stories from Boyle’s three most recent collections as well as 14 splendid new ones.
