MARION CENTER — The Marion Center Area school directors Monday again revised the school calendar to make up class days lost to winter weather cancellations.

April 17 and May 23 were changed from emergency weather days to regular school days, and March 14 was changed from an Act 80 day to a regular school day with classes in session for all students. June 5 will become an Act 80 day for the staff.

In other business Monday, directors discussed buying a new electronic marquee to be installed between the high school and Route 403, replacing the message board sign that has been there at least 27 years. The directors have looked at photos of outdoor electronic signs that cost about $30,000 and are in use at other schools in the county. The board asked administrators to gather information on features and prices for a marquee that would be about 4 feet tall and 10 feet wide.

Among other decisions, the directors will choose if the new marquee will display text only, or text and graphics and have the capability to display messages in multiple colors.

The directors moved forward with plans to replace the McCreery Elementary School’s domestic water heater and some components of the heating/ventilation/air conditioning system over the summer. The directors accepted bids of $115,700 from Mervac Plumbing & Heating, of Windber, for mechanical construction, and $2,175 from Clarion Environmental Services Inc., of Clarion, for asbestos abatement.

The board approved supplemental contracts with Dave Malicky as head football coach, $6,660; Paul DeHaven, assistant varsity football coach, $5,160; Adam Rising , assistant varsity football coach, $4,100; Ryan Lightcap, assistant varsity football coach, $3,750; Brad Smith, head junior high football coach, $4,435; P.J. Ackerson, assistant junior high football coach, $2,900; Chris Peters, head cross country coach, $3,700; Nicole Dann, assistant cross country coach, $2,650; Katie Proch, head volleyball coach, $3,500; and John Proch, assistant volleyball coach, $2,500.

In other action the board:

• Approved the constitution of the Fitness Club and recognized the club as a student organization. High school students will participate in extra fitness activities during club periods and after school.

• Accepted the resignation of Marissa Bruno as the band front sponsor.

• Approved Mark McMahan as a volunteer softball coach; Sandy Martin as a volunteer volleyball coach; and Chris Peters as a volunteer track and field coach; and added Kirby DeVaughn and Brandi Miller to the elementary volunteer list.
