While the country is in the midst of one of the coldest winters in recent memory, the Indiana Area Senior High School Key Club sponsored a sock drive in January to help those in need to have a little more warmth.

This drive comes on the heels of a successful winter clothing drive late last year, with the clothes being donated to the local Salvation Army.

IHS Key Club member and project leader Derek Stapleton, a senior, said, “I was recently reading that one of the most needed items for homeless people during the winter months is socks, so I came up with the idea that we could have a sock drive to help some people out. We don’t have many drives like this, so this one is really important.”

Throughout the month of January, students were able to donate new or gently used socks, which benefited the homeless shelters of Indiana County.

Donations were collected and housed in Room 136 by Key Club sponsor Devon Duffy.

In all, the students at Indiana donated more than 250 pairs of socks to the cause.

“The student response was great and Key Club was really impressed at how many socks we donated,” Stapleton said.

“The shelters were really appreciative of us for thinking of them during the winter months.”

Stapleton extended his thanks to everybody who donated to the cause and mentioned that Key Club is still accepting donations for this drive.

“Everyone should donate to help this cause, because many people could really use these donations for the winter,” Stapleton explained.

“We’re really helping them out.”
