Russian-born suspect to remain jailed

JOHNSTOWN (AP) — A federal judge has reversed himself and decided that a Russian-born college student accused of building bombs in his central Pennsylvania apartment will remain jailed until trial.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Kim Gibson last month said he was inclined to free Vladislav Miftakhov, 18. The Penn State-Altoona student has been jailed since his arrest.

But federal prosecutors appealed, and Gibson changed his mind in an opinion Friday.

Gibson earlier said it was apparent that Miftakhov set off explosions for kicks and didn’t intend to harm anyone. But Gibson changed his mind after learning that Miftakhov was on probation in his hometown of San Carlos, Calif.
