HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: Clayton leads Saltsburg to win

SPRING CHURCH — Kia Clayton won five events to help the Saltsburg girls’ track and field team defeat Apollo-Ridge, 91-53, in its season opener, a non-conference track and field meet Friday.

The Apollo-Ridge boys’ team beat Saltsburg, 93-57.

Clayton won the 100, the 200, the high jump, the long jump and the triple jump. Clayton also anchored the winning 400 relay team, which included Nicole Boyer, Michaela Simpson and Corrine Moore. Allyson Smathers won the 1,600 and the 3,200, and Taylor Koches took the 400 and the 800. Smathers and Koches each ran alongside Olivia Satler and Allyson Bonnoni on the winning 3,200 relay team, Moore won the shot put, and Kiana Reed took the 300 hurdles.

Claire Broman won the 100 hurdles to lead the Apollo-Ridge girls’ team (0-1). Jackie Rearick won the discus, Hannah Thompson took the pole vault, and Megan Bonelli placed first in the javelin.

Tre Tipton and Jesse Zelonka each won a pair of events to pace the Apollo-Ridge boys’ team (1-0).

Tipton took the high jump and the long jump, and Zelonka won the shot put and the discus. Tipton and Zelonka each ran alongside Dillon Tones and Jonah Cassella on the winning 400 relay team. Cassella also ran on the winning 1,600 relay team, which included Kyle Murray, Tim Viegas and Dom Schrecengost. Chris Schultz took the 110 hurdles, Murray won the 400, Schrecengost placed first in the triple jump, and Tones finished first in the pole vault.

Ryan Horchar won the 1,600 and the 3,200 to power the Saltsburg boys’ team (0-1). Horchar also ran alongside Derek Rocks, Austin McLean and Jared Unchapher on the winning 3,200 relay team. McLean won the 800, Tyler Lenhardt finished first in the javelin, Deion Robinson took the 200, and Zach Plunkett placed first in the 300 hurdles.

Apollo-Ridge travels to Ford City on Thursday. Saltsburg heads to Penns Manor for the Heritage Conference co-ed relays on Friday.
