NEW YORK (AP) — Twitter is proving to be one costly website for J.R. Smith.

The NBA fined the New York Knicks guard $25,000 for his exchange with Detroit Pistons guard Brandon Jennings on the social media website.

The league said the penalty was for “directing hostile and inappropriate language to another player via his Twitter account.”

Smith’s latest Twitter flap — he also was fined $25,000 by the NBA last year for a racy tweet — started Wednesday after Jennings made a critical comment about Smith’s little brother, Chris, who also plays for the Knicks.

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Tomas Berdych defeated Dusan Lajovic in straight sets Friday, allowing defending champion Czech Republic to even the Davis Cup final with Serbia at 1-1.

Novak Djokovic beat Radek Stepanek 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 for his 23rd straight win since losing to Rafael Nadal in the U.S. Open final in September.

Berdych beat the 117th-ranked Lajovic 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in the second singles match.

The doubles of the best-of-five series is today, with reverse singles on Sunday.
