Activist plans to oppose Corbett

HARRISBURG (AP) — A conservative activist said he’s planning to challenge Gov. Tom Corbett for the Republican nomination next year.

Bob Guzzardi, 69, a businessman and retired lawyer from the Philadelphia suburb of Ardmore, said Thursday he’ll run if he can gather the necessary signatures by the March 11 deadline.

All candidates for governor are required at a minimum to gather the signatures of 2,000 voters, including 100 from each of 10 counties.

Guzzardi said the governor’s support for increasing fuel taxes to finance transportation projects violated his no-new-taxes pledge and was the “straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Guzzardi said he plans a low-budget campaign financed by his own money.
