SPRING CHURCH — Motorists from Apollo and Avonmore, and teenaged passengers from Apollo and Kittanning have been identified as victims of a violent, head-on crash late Wednesday on Route 156 in Armstrong County.

Authorities reported Brandon James Sulava, 19, the driver of a westbound Ford Mustang GT, and Crystal Kay Kelley, 41, of Avonmore, the driver of an eastbound Chevrolet Lumina, died when the cars collided at 10:23 p.m.
Brieyonah Marie Painter, 18, of Kittanning, and Brandon Sauers, 15, of Apollo, the passengers riding with Sulava, also died at the scene, said Armstrong County Coroner Brian K. Myers.

The passengers riding with Kelley: Robert Edward Kelley Jr., 41, of Avonmore; Kent G. Smith, 34, of Elderton; and Kristy Ann Schall, 35, of Shelocta, were hospitalized with major injuries, according to state police at Kittanning.

Myers reported in a news release that Sulava’s vehicle crossed the centerline.

“Speed is determined to be a major factor in this accident,” he said.

The survivors, Myers said, were flown by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The coroner reported that autopsies will be performed on the drivers.
Elderton, Kiski Township and Rural Valley fire departments assisted police at the scene of the accident. Citizens’ Ambulance, Oklahoma Ambulance and Vandergrift Ambulance sent paramedics to the scene to treat the injured.

State police reported the crash remains under investigation.
