Capitals sign Orpik, Peters to free-agent deals

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — The Washington Capitals opened free agency Tuesday by signing defenseman Brooks Orpik to a $27.5 million, five-year contract, and goaltender Justin Peters to a $1.9 million, two-year contract.

The 33-year-old Orpik has played his entire NHL career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who drafted him in the first round in 2000.

The 6-foot-2, 219-pound Orpik has 13 goals, 119 assists and 734 penalty minutes in 703 career games.

The 27-year-old Peters went 7-9-4 with a 2.50 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage for the Carolina Hurricanes last season. He also played in six games for Charlotte of the AHL.

Peters made his NHL debut in February 2010, six years after being drafted in the second round by the Hurricanes.

A person familiar with the move says veteran defenseman Christian Ehrhoff has agreed to sign with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the Penguins had not announced the deal, reached a half hour into the start of the NHL's free agency period on Tuesday.

Ehrhoff became a free agent on Sunday after the Buffalo Sabres bought out the final seven seasons of the player's 10-year contract.

He's a 10-year NHL veteran who spent the past three seasons with the Sabres. Overall, the German-born Ehrhoff has 69 goals and 313 points in 692 games.

The Penguins are restocking on defense with Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik both entering free agency.
