Mansfield U. announces layoffs

MANSFIELD (AP) — Mansfield University plans to cut up to 29 full-time faculty positions and 25 administrative jobs due to a projected $14.3 million shortfall over the next two years, the school said Thursday. It blamed enrollment declines over the past three years and reduced state support.

“We find ourselves facing very serious challenges,” said Mansfield President Fran Hendricks. “Those affected are all valuable to the university, but we also have an obligation to live within our means and operate in a responsible manner.”

The school said discussions with faculty and staff who could lose jobs will take place in the days ahead. Mansfield is near the New York border.

Officials said the enrollment decline is a reflection of the shrinking number of high school graduates in northern Pennsylvania and the southern tier of New York. The problem is compounded by a steady decrease in state funding, which has fallen almost 14 percent since 2008.
