Marine veteran to challenge Rothfus
JOHNSTOWN (AP) — A Marine veteran said he plans to run against freshman U.S. Rep. Keith Rothfus in next year’s Republican primary for Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District.
Larry Stiles, 63, was a Republican from 1978 to 2007, but switched parties before switching back last year. Despite his affiliation, Stiles has criticized some other Republicans who have run for the western Pennsylvania seat and had a falling out with GOP candidate William Russell, whose campaign he managed in 2008.
Stiles, who said he has leukemia from exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam, said he’s running because he’s concerned about how the Department of Veterans Affairs manages its health care system.
He also wants the district to be represented by someone from Johnstown, as it was under longtime Congressman John Murtha and his successor, Mark Critz. Rothfus is from Pittsburgh’s suburbs.
