Wind farm plans debated

NORTH EAST (AP) — Residents in North East are debating a proposed ordinance on the placement of large wind turbines.

The Erie Times-News reported Sunday that a Texas company plans to build the region’s first commercial wind farm in the area. Township supervisors recently revised an ordinance to increase minimum setbacks between turbines and neighboring property lines, but some residents are still worried about noise, property values and shadows from the giant blades.

The ordinance would require setbacks from homes of five times the turbine’s height, not counting blades. That means a 275-foot tall turbine couldn’t be built within 1,375 feet of a home.

Pioneer Green Energy of Austin, Texas, plans to build eight to 12 commercial wind turbines, and construction could begin later this year.
