HARMONY: Elementary receives playground equipment

by NICOLE ELLI, Gazette Student News Reporter on March 08, 2013 11:00 AM

WESTOVER — The long wait for the elementary to get their new playground equipment is almost over.

Harmony Education Boosters (HEB) at Harmony School District have saved for three years to purchase the new piece of playground equipment. The base price was $19,950 paid to Sports and Recreation in Apollo, who also installed the set. Parent volunteers will help finish the project by putting down mulch and boards which will cost extra.

The Walmart Distribution Center in Clearfield gave a $1,500 grant to help pay for the project. Elementary Student Council donated $500 and L.B. Trucking from Hastings donated a truck to haul away the excavated dirt. The donating didn’t stop there.

The elementary faculty and staff donated the profit from two of their Dress Down Fridays, which totaled about $75. Most of the money came from fundraising by Harmony’s families.

HEB would like to thank everyone who supported this project, and the elementary would like to thank HEB, especially HEB president Cindy McGarvey, who put the whole project together.

Elementary Principal Terri Butterworth said, “I would just like to add a big thank you to HEB for all their efforts to make this project possible so our children have a safe piece of equipment to play on this spring.”

Now if only the weather would cooperate.

Pennies for Patients

The elementary school has also been involved in a program called Pennies for Patients. Each student is sent home with a colorful box, and is given the mission to collect loose change around the house. All of the funds raised are used to support research and patient aid programs for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. So far, through School & Youth Programs like Pennies for Patients, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has raised more than $100 million. Anyone can donate online with a debit/credit card at www.schoolandyouth.org/wpa.

Last year Harmony Elementary raised $867.78. They hope to top this amount this year. The Elementary Student Council counts the change, and keeps track of which class is winning the race. Each student is motivated to bring in as much change as possible, so their class will win a pizza party.
