SALTSBURG — The spring musical, archery club, French field trip and Zumba classes round out the latest events at Saltsburg High School.

This year’s musical, “High School Musical,” is about two teenagers who meet through an act of fate. Gabriella Montez, the science wiz, and Troy Bolton, the all-star basketball player, find themselves in a love connection. The catch is, can Troy be willing to show his fellow basketball players he can sing, or will he forget about the musical and keep his “head in the game” for the upcoming championship game?

Find out April 10-12 in the Saltsburg High School auditorium.

A new club has created excitement at the high school. The archery club is run by Linsey Palazzi. The signup sheet for grades six through 12 had an overwhelming 50 signatures. They hope to compete in the National Archery Competition next year. The club received a grant from The Pennsylvania Game Commission for $3,000 to help supply proper equipment. They also want to develop an archery team to allow students an opportunity to become active and go outside.

Kathleen Hanlon’s French I and II students from both Blairsville and Saltsburg high schools took a combined field trip on Feb. 11. The first stop was at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh where students viewed one of the Omnimax movie features, “SeaMonsters: a Prehistoric Adventure” in French. It was an awesome French language immersion experience and an entertaining audio/visual experience rolled into one.

The group ate together at the Science Center and then traveled up the road to Millvale to visit the Jean-Marc Chatellier Bakery. Students had the opportunity to buy authentic French bakery items such as croissants and macaroons. The atmosphere in the bakery was cozy and very Parisian. As always, Hanlon was proud of the students as they handled themselves respectfully throughout the trip. It was a well-deserved “bon voyage” for mid-February.

Zumba classes will be offered on March 26 in the high school cafeteria. The two time options are 4 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Classes will be taught by certified Zumba instructor and science teacher Jennifer Little.
