SALTSBURG — Saltsburg Middle-High School will be sponsoring a Free Application for Federal Student Aid completion session for senior students and their parents from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Don’t miss out on assistance for college. By filing out the FAFSA online, students take the first crucial step to determining if they qualify for a Federal Pell Grant, Pennsylvania State Grant, scholarships, institutional awards and federal student loans. Be sure to submit a FAFSA as soon as possible to meet all financial aid deadlines.

Contact Jen Watson, guidance counselor, for more information by calling (724) 639-3547, ext. 5605.

Saltsburg Elementary School has received two grants for physical education with the help of Justin Kulik, physical education teacher.

Kulik wrote the grants and has devoted many hours preparing to implement them. The first grant was from the Highmark Foundation for $5,000 and the other was from the Reebok Foundation for $1,000. The grants will address students from kindergarten to 12th grade.

Both grants will be used for the same goal — to make students healthy, fit and active and achieve sustainable and lasting change.

The argument claims when students participate in physical education in the morning, they are able to absorb new knowledge during their academic classes throughout the rest of the day.

Enhancing physical activity thereby enhances academic performance, as proven by the heightened percentage of passing to failing student ratios. A healthy body is more industrious and eager to learn.

The grants will also be used to promote good eating habits. The school plans to use the money it is receiving to invest in a small garden in the elementary school courtyard.

This will give students an opportunity to watch and learn how fresh fruits and vegetables grow. It will also help to introduce them to new vegetation as well.

The money the school receives is not only going to a garden, but also toward gym equipment in an effort to promote healthier students.

Saltsburg High School’s Senior Night took place on Feb. 14. Basketball players Ian Satler, Steven Richards, Thomas Roman, Dominic Feiling and Ben Shirley were recognized from the boys’ varsity team.

Seniors Ashton Battistelli, Melissa Pascoe, Emilie Okopal and Rachel Tandaric were recognized from the girls’ varsity team. Lastly, varsity cheerleaders Rayannon Willett and Ashton Battistelli were recognized.

On Wednesday, the freshman class watched a presentation on class rings. A Jostens representative visited the school to show the freshmen how to design their class ring.

Students will be able to order their class rings on Feb. 26 during all lunch periods.

Students can go to www.jostens.com to design a custom ring.

The junior class will be selling Sheetz coupon booklets to help raise money for the prom, scheduled for May 10.
