WEST SHAMOKIN: Special days mark Red Ribbon Week

RURAL VALLEY — From Oct. 28 through Nov. 1, the West Shamokin SADD (Student Against Destructive Decisions) Club hosted its annual Red Ribbon Week.

Through this event the club hoped to raise awareness of the importance of being drug-free. Each day of the week the students were instructed to wear something specific to school each day. Monday was Camouflage Day, Tuesday was Crazy Hair Day, Thursday was Crazy Shoe Day and today was Red Out Day.

Along with the red ribbon spirit week, SADD also organized a scavenger hunt; they placed “50 Ways to Be Drug Free” all around the school. Students were tasked with finding each of the signs and writing down all 50 ways to be drug-free, and those students who found all 50 ways to be drug-free will receive prizes. This is a tradition that has been going on in schools across the country for a very long time.

For the first time in years, the West Shamokin High School varsity football team will be going to the playoffs. The morale here at the school is very high and the boys are looking forward to going to the playoffs and doing West Shamokin proud.

The varsity cheerleading squad will also be attending a competition in Blairsville this Saturday.

The student body here at West Shamokin is very proud and excited for all of our sports teams and wishes them the best of luck.

West Shamokin High School wellness coordinator/physical education teacher Susan Meixelberger, in conjunction with Healthy Armstrong and our own student council, saw to it that every student and teacher got a delicious apple for this day.
