Cecilia Sherwood, of Indiana, has been selected as the 2020 Recipient of the Mark Hess Scholarship.
The scholarship has been endowed by donations from family, friends, co-workers, students and community members in memory of Mark Hess, whose 27-year career as a beloved teacher, hall of fame swimming coach and relentlessly positive mentor at Indiana Area High School left an indelible mark on our community.
The scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates not only athletic accomplishment but excellence in academics, leadership and community service.
Sherwood, the daughter of Ken Sherwood and Dawn Smith-Sherwood, will graduate from IHS as a four-year high honors student and member of National Honor Society. She was a was a four-year varsity athlete in two sports, serving as girls’ lacrosse captain for three years and swimming captain as a senior. She was president of the Art Portfolio Club, where she led the Downtown Indiana Art Sale among other community art initiatives. She has also been a math tutor and volunteer sailing instructor for youths.
She plans to attend Alfred (N.Y.) University in the fall, where she will continue her athletic career on the lacrosse team while pursuing a BFA in the School of Art and Design, with a second major in math or economics, while participating in the honors program.
