WEST WHEATFIELD TOWNSHIP — An Indiana-area man died and his companion was injured early Saturday in a traffic crash on a backroad about 1 1/2 miles west of the United High School complex.
Daniel Rodkey, 26, of Route 422, Armstrong Township, was killed when he was ejected through the windshield, the Indiana County coroner’s office reported.
The driver, a 24-year-old Seward man, was intoxicated, according to police. He was reported to have climbed from the wreckage on his own.
The men were riding in a 2019 Tesla Model 3 that slammed headlong into some trees and rocks just before 3 a.m. The eastbound car on Ofman Road failed to stop at the “T” intersection with Cresswell Road, investigators said.
The driver hasn’t been publicly named. He was sent to Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown for treatment.
Trooper Cliff Greenfield told the Gazette that the motorist’s name would be withheld until medical tests and an accident reconstruction are completed.
Rodkey didn’t use a seat belt. The car came to rest on top of him, Coroner Jerry Overman said.
The Armagh & East Wheatfield Township fire department and Citizens’ Ambulance Service were dispatched by the Indiana County 911 center at 3:06 a.m. Investigators put the time of the crash at 2:56 a.m.
An obituary for Rodkey appears today on The Indiana Gazette Online.
