Police car lights 11

WEST WHEATFIELD TOWNSHIP — An ongoing investigation into a fatal traffic crash early Saturday in southeastern Indiana County shows that a high-tech car was under the driver’s control at the time of the accident.

The autopilot feature was not engaged, state police said, when a 2019 Tesla Model 3 sped through the stop sign at the end of Ofman Road, crossed a “T” intersection with Shellbark Road and struck a large rock and some trees.

A front seat passenger, Daniel Rodkey, was thrown through the windshield and fatally injured when the car flipped on top of him, state police reported today.

Rodkey, 26, of Route 422, Armstrong Township, hailed from the area of the crash. He was a 2011 graduate of United High School.

Police continued to withhold the name of a 24-year-old Seward man who drove the car. Investigators said the man climbed from the wreckage and was sent to Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown for treatment of injuries.

The motorist was suspected of driving under the influence but has not been charged, police said.
