WATERFORD TOWNSHIP — A 2018 Blairsville High School graduate drowned Tuesday night while swimming at Sparrow Point Family Campground in Erie County.
Orahnde Askew, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:10 p.m., Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said Wednesday.
“The death has been ruled accidental due to drowning by asphyxiation,” Cook said.
According to state police, Askew was swimming in a pond at the campground along Route 19 around 8:05 p.m. when he became distressed and went under the water. Troopers reported that two other swimmers told them they did not see Askew leave the pond.
A few individuals at the park attempted to help Askew, but were unsuccessful, police said.
Cook said local dive teams recovered the body.
“He was witnessed by fishermen as being there with other people,” Cook said. “And he was seen entering the water. He didn’t fall in or anything.”
Askew participated in football and track at Blairsville and attended IUP last year as a freshman.
State police are investigating the incident.
