blaze that swept through a one-and-a-half-story house along Nowrytown Road

Firefighters from Indiana and Westmoreland counties battled a late Wednesday afternoon blaze that swept through a one-and-a-half-story house along Nowrytown Road in Conemaugh Township.

CONEMAUGH TOWNSHIP — A house along Nowrytown Road was reported to be a total loss after a late Wednesday afternoon fire.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, which was called in to Indiana County 911 at 2:29 p.m. Smoke from that fire could be seen from across the Kiskiminetas River in the Bell Township area.

The homeowner reportedly was there but was able to escape.

The Saltsburg Volunteer Fire Department was assisted by Tunnelton-Conemaugh Township and Derry Township volunteer firefighters. Fire officials said the blaze had a significant head start on those called to battle it.

Authorities believe it began at the rear of the structure and was pushed into the house by the wind.

Indiana County Hazmat Team 900 also was dispatched at 3:30 p.m.

Three companies were called to serve as backup, with the Coal Run/McIntyre Volunteer Fire Department called out at 2:36 p.m., the Slickville Volunteer Fire Department called out at 2:44 p.m., and the New Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department dispatched at 3:03 p.m.
