The Coach Mike DeRubis Scholarship is available now for Blairsville High School seniors.

Thanks to generous donations, the amount awarded will double for 2019 to $1,000 each to benefit one male and one female Blairsville senior toward their post-secondary education at a four-year college, community college, trade or technical school. The Coach Mike DeRubis Annual Scholarship is offered in partnership with the Best of the Batch Foundation.

The Best of the Batch Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by NFL quarterback Charlie Batch in 1999. It is devoted to improving the lives of children and families in distressed communities by building character, self-esteem and appreciation for education. The Best of the Batch Foundation embodies his values of dedication, leadership and trust along with his personal motto — the five P’s — in all aspects of life: proper preparation prevents poor performance. These are all values shared and expressed by DeRubis throughout his coaching career, making the partnership for the scholarship with the Batch Foundation a natural fit.

Applications are available for download at The deadline for submission is April 12 at 5 p.m. In addition to the program guidelines listed on the website, students must demonstrate participation in a volunteer activity as well as an extracurricular activity at school.

DeRubis served as a volunteer coach for many sports in the Blairsville community for over 30 years and will be remembered for his passion to make a difference and his impact as a lasting positive influence in young people’s lives.
