At the September monthly meeting of the Burrell Township Library Board of Trustees, President Helen Lichtenfels reviewed the successful open house held on Sept. 12.

Everyone was pleased with the attendance, which included County Commissioner Rodney Ruddock, state Rep. Dave Reed and members of the Bork family. A photo that appeared in the Blairsville Dispatch was also shared.

Director Kate Abner updated the board on planned activities, including showing movies, a craft activity and an update on the Halloween party. Movies are to be shown both Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Titles cannot be published, but the type of movie will be noted on the webpage and in the library. Interested families or individuals may visit or call the library to learn the title to be shown. A craft activity is planned for Oct. 17 for children with hopes of making it a bimonthly event. The Halloween party will be held Oct. 31 with a haunted library tour, featuring a treat at the end for all brave adventurers.

In addition to the upcoming events within the library, Abner noted that plans are under way for a Girl Scout troop to meet in the community room on Saturdays that are not movie days.

During the week of Sept. 22, the library will feature a banned book display demonstrating the freedom of reading established by public libraries.

Story Hour attendance has increased recently with the number of attendees tripling over last year. It is hoped that caregivers and children continue to attend for Ms. Roxie’s very enjoyable hour of sharing stories, songs and fun.

Through the help of Joanna Dinger, independent senior consultant with Thirty-One gifts, the library will host a fundraising event from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 14. All are invited to stop by to view items available for purchase and/or order on-site and enjoy light refreshments.

Raffling of seasonal baskets will begin Sept. 20 with sales in front of Walmart and at the Community Booth at the Indiana Mall near K-Mart. Mall dates are Tuesday and Oct. 23. Seven baskets will be offered with the drawings to be held Nov. 16. Tickets may also be purchased at the library.

A “Let Freedom Ring” Election Day ham dinner will be served on Nov. 5 at the United Methodist Church in Black Lick. Tickets are limited to 100, so get yours today at the library or send your check for $10 per person to the library with notation that you need the tickets reserved in your name. The cost for children 4 to 10 years of age is $6. Enjoy a relaxing meal with family and friends. It was noted that volunteers from the community are needed to help make the dinner a success.
