Library announces free events for week

The Indiana Free Library, at 845 Philadelphia St., offers the following free programs for the week of June 23:


• Movie Monday, 10:30 a.m.: “Dinosaur.” The story of a 3-ton iguanodon raised by a family of lemurs. (83 mins.) All kids invited for a movie and popcorn. (Children’s department.)

• Dr. Irwin Marcus History Lecture, 1 p.m.: “Is U.S. Foreign Policy a Type of Imperialism?” Explores a broad definition of imperialism. Discussion will include the presidency, worldwide military bases, and the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Refreshments provided. (Second-floor reading area)

• Special Program, 7 p.m.: “Everyday Life in the Civil War Era: The Homefront and the Battlefront.” In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, Civil War re-enactors Don and Becky Becker will discuss the life of soldiers on the march and the role of women on the homefront. Includes period costumes and displays. All ages welcome. Refreshments provided. (Community room)


• Tuesday Tales, 10:30 a.m.: “I Dig Dinosaurs!” Stories, songs, movement exercises, and a craft for toddlers and preschoolers. (Children’s department)

• Teen Summer Reading Program, 3 p.m.: “Plant In a Bottle.” Create a unique hanging planter to enjoy this summer. Bring a book to recommend to the group and earn an extra prize. Refreshments served. (Teen space)


• Family Program, 10:30 a.m.: “Digging into Indiana County’s Past.” Indiana County historian John Busovicki will share historic photos and memorabilia and describe the fascinating history of this area we call home. For children of all ages. (Children’s department)

• Film Club, 6 p.m.: “The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad.” In this classic 1958 adventure Sinbad journeys to an island of monsters to rescue a princess and prevent a war. Free. All ages welcome. (Community room)

• Crafty Wednesdays, 7 p.m.: “Dinosaur Bones & Other Artifacts.” An evening program featuring crafts from the morning children’s programs. For children of all ages. (Children’s department)


• Express Yourself!, 10:30 a.m.: Creative writing program for children ages 8 and up. Journals will be provided. (Children’s department)

• Classics Book Club, 10:30 a.m.: “The Return of the Native.” Join a lively discussion of Thomas Hardy’s story of young love betrayed by circumstance. Refreshments served (Second-floor reading area)

• Pins and Patches Quilting Group, 1 p.m.: For those working on a project or looking to learn. Refreshments provided. (Community room)

• Thursdays 101, 2 p.m.: “Build Your Own Class!” Sign up to attend this computer skills class and pick the topic you want to learn about. Call Helen at the library to sign up.
