Veterans groups solicit names for planned memorial wall

on May 10, 2013 10:59 AM

The combined veteran groups of the Blairsville area, American Legion Post 0407 and VFW Post 5832, have started a drive to erect a memorial for Blairsville-area military veterans who lost their lives or who are missing in action.

This is to replace the honor roll board that was removed from its downtown location.

The first step is to identify those members of the community who have earned a spot on that hallowed roll.

The veterans group is asking the families in the following communities to contact them if their family member was indeed lost during a military engagement with a declared enemy: Blairsville, Brenizer, Black Lick, Torrance, Strangford and areas with a Blairsville mailing address. These communities are included because of the close relationship with the borough of Blairsville. Many of the members of the above veterans groups are residents of these communities.

To ensure that only those deserving this honor are listed, the names provided will be verified by some manner of evidence. If you have a family member who qualifies, contact Bill Orr at (724) 459-6390 or by email at

The expectation is the new memorial will be built, at a location to be determined, in the summer of 2014. It is important to respond to this request as soon as possible to ensure your family member is included, Orr said.

Funding for this project will primarily be provided through donations. Any donation you can make will be greatly appreciated. Direct donations to: Blairsville Area Veteran Memorial Fund, c/o Bill Orr, 342 High Rise Drive, Blairsville, PA 15717.
