SHELOCTA — Mt. Union Lutheran Church, 1051 Girty Road, will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Sunday with a special service at 4 p.m. The first service was preached by the Rev. J.J. Wright on Sunday, Aug. 25, 1869, with 16 members.

The Rev. Joyce Dix-Weiers, S.T.S., was installed in 2005 shortly after her ordination. She says this is a milestone for this congregation and it is wonderful for God’s work in this community.

The special service on Sunday will be preached by the Rev. Carl Johnson, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kittanning and dean of Mid-Northeast Mission District of the North American Lutheran Church.

In 1895, Mt. Union and Christ Lutheran of Gastown formed a parish and a few years ago were joined by St. Mark’s of Adrian, Christ Rupp of Kittanning and Salem Lutheran of Smicksburg and formed Resurrection Lutheran Cooperative Ministry with the Rev. Matthew Vatalare, S.T.S., preaching together between the five churches.

Faith is the key to the longevity of Mt. Union and all are invited to come and be a part of its congregation, with service starting at 11:25 a.m. Sunday.
