STUDENT OF THE MONTH: Haley Stapleton
Haley Stapleton, a June graduate of Indiana Area Senior High School, has been named June Girl of the Month by the Junior Women’s Civic Club. She is the daughter of Wally and Becky Stapleton.
Haley is a member of the National Honor Society and was named as one of the Tribune-Review’s top ten outstanding young citizens. She won the Ninth Congressional District art award and her covered bridge drawing has hung at the U.S. Capitol for the last year. She received the Jonathan Robeson Scholarship and Colorado State University selected her as a Provost’s Scholarship recipient. She has been active in school as the senior class secretary; a member of the Student Government Association; president of the Spanish Exchange Club; and vice president of the Art Portfolio Club. She was selected to participate in the prestigious Westinghouse Science Institute and was a member of the Science Olympiad, Powder Puff Football and KIVA Club.
Haley has won varsity letters in volleyball, track and field, softball and swimming. In volleyball, she was named to the first team All-State, first team All-Section and All-WPIAL team, and was a captain of the team. She was a member of the volleyball teams that made it to the state playoffs in her sophomore and senior seasons. She received the Scholar-Athlete award from the Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame.
Haley danced for 11 years at Sue Hewitt’s Dance Studio and enjoys drawing, working out and babysitting.
Her community activities have included being a camp counselor for the last five years at Graystone Church’s “Summer’s Best Two Weeks”; assisting with Bob’s Buddies, a benefit for the American Heart Association in memory of her uncle; and participating in the Teddy Bear Fund Drive, highway cleanup, Love Basket food sort, Dancers With Heart and Sole and Volley for a Cure. She has been an altar server for seven years at the St. Thomas More University Parish and is a member of the youth group.
Haley will attend Colorado State, majoring in biology and minoring in Spanish and studio art.
