Three local students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania have been selected for membership in Alpha Kappa Delta sociology honor society.

They are:

• Lacey Aikins, White Township, daughter of Kim and Rodney Aikins.

A sociology major, she is a 2008 graduate of Calvary Baptist Academy. She was selected for the Alpha Kappa Delta Outstanding Senior Award, is a dean’s list student and provost scholar, and was selected for membership in Phi Kappa Phi honor society. She was a volunteer at The Salvation Army.

• Penny Dean, Indiana, daughter of Gary and Sandra Dean.

A psychology major, she is a 2009 graduate of Indiana High School. She is a member of Psi Chi psychology honor society and was a student worker in the Adult and Community Education program at IUP.

• Sara Werner, Indiana, daughter of Vicky and Fred Cypher.

A sociology major, she is a 2004 graduate of Elderton Junior-Senior High School. She received the Outstanding Senior Award from the department; was president of Delta Alpha Pi honor society; founded and was the president of the ICAN organization, a group supporting students with disabilities; and was vice president of Andale, the Spanish Club at IUP.

Alpha Kappa Delta members do community service and participate in the American Sociological Association’s national meetings and honors program.


Dr. Heather M. Lezanic was awarded a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at commencement exercises at the University of Pittsburgh’s Petersen Event Center on April 28. She graduated magna cum laude.

She has accepted a position as a community pharmacist with Giant Eagle in Youngstown, Ohio.

She is the daughter of Greg and Lori Lezanic and the granddaughter of Don and Arlene Berkebile and Charles Lezanic, all of Indiana, and the late Darlene Lezanic.

Lezanic is a 2007 graduate of Marion Center High School.


The Indiana County Health Care Careers Consortium recently awarded $500 scholarships to Autumn Shellhammer, of Commodore, and Timothy A. George Jr., of Indiana.

A student at Purchase Line High School, Shellhammer is planning to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania for pre-physical therapy and natural sciences.

George is a sophomore at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. He works at the Ambulance Service Management Corp.

The consortium also awarded scholarships to attend Certified Nursing Assistant training at Westmoreland County Community College to Beverly Ann Debnar, of New Florence, and Donna Nagg, of Clarksburg.
