5K run/walk set for May 5 on IUP campus
The Student Athletic Advisory Committee at Indiana University of Pennsylvania is hosting its third annual 5K Run/Walk to benefit the National Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania on May 4, rain or shine.
Registration starts at 11 a.m. and the race will begin at 1 p.m. at South Campus, near the baseball and softball fields. The 5K course will start and end at South Campus, 1317 University Drive.
Each participant will be entered to win prizes upon registration.
Between 8,000 and 10,000 people in the area live with Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder. In the initial evaluation and diagnosis, some physicians use the term “parkinsonism,” an umbrella term applied to the clinical syndromes that share the cardinal movement disorders of rigidity, postural instability, resting tremors and bradykinesia (slow movements and reflexes).
A clinical diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease is made by assessing motor function or movement.
When the symptoms are present, medications known to reduce the symptoms are often used to increase the likelihood of making a correct diagnosis.
