Advent concert series kicks off Thursday
GLEN CAMPBELL — The Historic First Baptist Church of Glen Campbell will again this year offer to people of all Christian faiths from throughout the region a three-part Thursday Advent Organ Concert with Prayer, Liturgy and Lunch starting this Thursday at 12:10 p.m. The series will continue on Dec. 12 and 19.
The purpose of the series is to make the Advent season, a time traditionally spent in spiritually getting ready for the birth of Emmanuel at Christmas, a more meaningful event for Christians.
Each week a different organist will play a short concert of Advent and seasonal music; two hymns will be sung by the congregation and one lesson will be read. There will be a short liturgical interaction between clergy and the people, and prayers will be offered up to God.
Following the short service and concert, a free homemade soup luncheon will be served in the church’s fellowship hall with bread/rolls and butter, coffee or milk and homemade desserts. A contribution toward the program may be made by free will, but no offering is required.
This Thursday, the organist will be Robert Copeland, a former long-term organist at Glen Campbell and a noted organ builder and repairman in our region. The celebrant will be the Rev. Dr. Allan N. Campbell. The public is invited and encouraged to take time in the middle of the day and invest it in the Advent of Christ.
