APOLLO-RIDGE: School personnel changes, raises announced
SPRING CHURCH — The school year opened with a number of personnel changes at Apollo-Ridge School District, as well as raises for top administrators.
At last week’s meeting, the school board hired a new secondary health and physical education teacher, Karissa Petrilla, of Apollo,
and two long-term learning support substitutes, Heather Jones, of Apollo, and Tabi Bowers, of Punxsutawney.
Petrilla will make $31,000 a year. Jones and Bowers will be paid based on a $24,960 salary, pro-rated by the length of their assignments. Bowers will work Aug. 21 to Oct. 7; Jones, Sept. 11 to Dec. 23, according to school officials.
The board also approved raises for administrators and two other district employees. The raises, according to officials, were based on cost-of-living increases, goal attainment and, in some cases, added responsibilities.
The raises represent, on average, a 3 percent increase, with the exception of those with the expanded roles, who received bigger raises.
Those positions include the superintendent, whose salary goes from $110,000 to $114,400, the elementary principal, whose salary increased from $64,000 to $70,383, and the director of building and grounds, who will make $60,677 this year, up from $55,677.
Others receiving increases include the middle school principal, who took on the added responsibilities of curriculum coordinator, and a secretarial position that now covers both the food service and building offices.
The middle school principal’s salary increased from last year’s $84,957 to $90,050.The secretary’s salary increased from $38,430 to $43,430.
In other personnel changes, officials voted to hire Marvin Geer, of Spring Church, for a custodial position at $8.50 an hour. He will work four hours a day.
The school board also accepted Geer’s resignation from his elementary paraprofessional position, as well as the resignations of secondary health and physical education teacher Kelly Schaults and custodian Theresa Brown.
Twenty-nine supplemental contract positions were filled. The pay ranges from $317 for the musical costume designer to $4,756 for the high school band director.
School directors approved the 2013-14 list of substitute teachers and the transfer of Audra Byers to a part-time food service position.
Byers will make $13.97 an hour and work seven and a half hours per day.
A resolution made at the June 24 meeting was overturned due to the failure of a new custodial hire, Adam Ford, to report to work or submit a resignation.
District officials also:
• Gave the go-ahead to changing the district’s contract with online education provider Edmentum from one year to three.
The decision, which Superintendent Matt Curci later described as a “definite budget buster” brings with it a savings of $2,700 each year — or $8,100 over the three-year contract.
The multi-year agreement is less costly than an annual renewal plan, according to Curci.
Edmentum is the company behind Apollo-Ridge’s Study Island program, which offers remediation, enrichment and benchmarking for elementary to high school students.
• Approved the Apollo Little League’s plans to build a storage shed and replace bleachers at the baseball field it leases from the district. The Little League will cover the cost of the improvements, according to Curci.
• Heard from school director Sharon Jaworskyj who reported that the Apollo-Ridge Education Foundation’s annual membership drive has started.
Membership costs range from $25 for individuals to $300 for corporate lifetime memberships.
• Announced the district’s open house schedule: kindergarten, second and fourth grades, Sept. 10; first, third and fifth grades, Sept. 12; middle school, Sept. 18; and high school, Sept. 25.
