The New Century Club/ Friends of the Library invites the public to attend a Book Breakfast review and discussion of “The Real Jane Austen: A Life in Small Things,” a new biography by Paula Byrne.
The title refers to objects owned by Austen, such as the notebooks in which she recorded her earliest stories and poems, or the topaz cross given to her by one of her sailor brothers and the ways in which the study of them and what they meant to Austen can illuminate her life and works.
Sara Steelman will be the reviewer. She will also briefly examine some causes of the modern enthusiasm for Austen and its reflection in novels, memoirs, movies, television shows, conferences, costumes and coffee mugs.
Familiarity with the book is not required to attend and enjoy the review.
The Book Breakfast will take place at 9:15 a.m. Thursday in the dining room at St. Andrew’s Village, 1155 Indian Springs Road, White Township. Reserved, marked parking is available at the end of the parking lot. The cost for nonsubscribers to the series is $5. Subscriptions for the entire series can be purchased for $45. A continental breakfast, donated by St. Andrew’s, will be served. All proceeds from these breakfasts are donated to the Indiana Free Library.
