CANDIDATE: Mark Milner (Republican)
After 15 years running Milner Painting and Wall-Covering, Mark Milner said he was looking for a less physical job when he realized the tax collector position would be vacant.
And he realized that his experience running a small business qualified him for the position, he said.
“This opportunity presented itself at a time when I’m starting to think about down the road a few years,” he said. “I still don’t know what the job pays. I have not looked into it.”
Milner said that the “intangible” values he developed early in life have helped him be successful, most recently with Milner Painting and Wall-Covering, and those values and experiences apply to the tax collector position.
“You’re basically going to have a small business,” he said. “I do think that my people skills and my personality can be applied to this job in a very positive manner, and I’ve always been a good listener.”
Milner said he would keep regular office hours and would be available outside those hours by appointment.
“I would go above and beyond what’s asked of me,” he said. “I am just carrying on that image and that legacy of my family … so whenever folks call me to provide services for them, there’s no doubt in their mind that they’re calling a person that will provide them with what they want.”
Milner studied business management at Allegany College of Maryland and has experience in retail management, vending business ownership and insurance. He and his wife, Vicki, have two children.
