CARL KOLOGIE: Summer in the South
LAKE WALES, Fla. — There is a group of Indiana County residents who get together on a regular monthly basis throughout the summer for dinner, or just an outing, and they all have one thing in common: they are “snowbirds.”
That’s the term the southerners use to describe the northerners who head for the sun and warm weather during the winter months.
Well, at last count, there were about 35 who make the trip from the county area to Tower Lakes, a retirement community located near Lake Wales in Central Florida.
Last week two of us, Dennis Smith and I, decided to head south for a short stay and check out the August heat in Florida.
And believe me, it is hot … and very humid.
Of course the local residents have the answer, if you can’t take the heat, don’t go outdoors. It doesn’t bother them.
Tee times at the golf courses start well before 7 a.m. and most of the early times are gobbled up by the locals. But we did manage to get in a few rounds of golf.
It is also a good idea to get lawn work done early.
On the plus side, the pool is just about empty every day, as compared to the more crowded conditions when all the snowbirds arrive.
But, as the permanent residents said, you do become accustomed to the hot weather.
Also very noticeable is the fact that there are no lines at the restaurants. That will change in a few months.

We had some guests from Indiana over the weekend.
Eric and Monica Jones and their sons were in the Lakeland area for a few days, which is about a half hour from our location.
And Andy and Lynn Stavres live in Winter Haven, about 15 minutes away.
The Stavres were in Indiana recently for the reunion of the Black Jocks, the 1950 undefeated Indiana High School football team.
Oh, in case you were wondering how they got the name Black Jocks, the football team decided to dye their athletic supporters black and wear them on the outside of the gym outfits during intra-murals.
And, as you would expect, the administration put a quick halt to that real quick, but the name Black Jocks was born.

Would you believe gas prices in Florida are in the $3.26 a gallon range? Some as low as $3.23 and no higher than $3.34.
In Virginia gas was $3.02.
It makes you wonder.
