Commonplace Coffee Co. named among best in nation
T.J. and Julie Fairchild’s success is brewing. And it’s showing on a national level.
The Pittsburgh locations of their business, the Indiana-based Commonplace Coffee Co. House and Roasters, recently were ranked No. 11 of 33 independent coffeehouses in the nation on the food and drink website The Daily Meal.
“It’s very exciting to not only be that high (on the list) but to be among some of our favorites,” T.J. Fairchild said. “It was a pretty amazing little write-up.”
Fairchild said that when a representative from the website called him to ask for permission to use one of the company’s photos, he wasn’t sure why at first.
“Then we found out it was for their slide show (of America’s best coffee shops),” Fairchild said.
The main story on The Daily Meal talks about “entering into the fourth wave” of coffee, in which coffee shops go beyond just serving better roasts or turning your cup of joe into a work of art.
“They’re building relationships with the growers, sourcing beans in ethical and sustainable means, making single-origin roasts to bring out unique flavors and brewing with innovative techniques never seen before,” the article states.
And so staffers at The Daily Meal sought out the best independent coffee shops and chains around the country, basing criteria on quality in coffee and food, atmosphere, customer service and the “unique” factor. They then put together a panel of coffee experts — from bloggers to roasters, shop owners, baristas and educators — to vote on nearly 150 shops.
In the end, it was narrowed to 33 of the “most highly ranked” and “most talked about” that are “riding into the fourth wave and beyond.”
Fairchild said he still isn’t exactly sure how the Commonplace got on the website’s radar or which food/coffee blogger “brought us to their attention. But based on their write-up, they did their research because they had specific details on the business,” not just general information.
Nonetheless, “it’s an honor for us,” he said.
He also said the stock photo The Daily Meal used for its write-up is from the Squirrel Hill shop, but the piece brings “companywide recognition.”
“It’s pretty exciting for Indiana as well because it’s still an Indiana-based business and it’s carried us until about a year ago as a company,” he said.
Commonplace Coffee Co. House and Roasters has four locations: The Commonplace Coffeehouse & Roastery at 1176 Grant St. on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus, The Commonplace at Indiana Regional Medical Center, The Commonplace Coffeehouse at 5827 Forbes Ave. in Squirrel Hill and The Commonplace Voluto at 5467 Penn Ave. in Pittsburgh.
