Dance company to bring jazz influences to stage
For the next event of its Ovations! series, the Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will feature a performance by the world touring Koresh Dance Company. This one-night only event will be held on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center.
Founded in 1991 by Israeli-born choreographer and artistic director Ronen Koresh, this troupe has grown to become one the world’s top dance companies with a reputation for technically superb dancers and engaging, passionate performances. They tour extensively across the nation and abroad, continuing to attract increasing audiences of all ages.
Roni Koresh does not label his choreography as jazz, but during the past two decades, he has drawn heavily upon that lexicon and its presentational, display-oriented style. Koresh’s fusion of jazz with ballet and modern dance elements is fast, fierce, linear and relentless. To achieve it, his performers are athletic, elastic and committed to choreography’s driving rhythms and intense physical demands.
In addition to performances, Koresh Dance Company is equally committed to community building and outreach. While on tour, the company provides diverse outreach offerings that connect with dancers and non-dancers alike.
This performance will be the culmination of three extended visits by Koresh to Indiana over the past several months, which included working with students at Indiana Area Junior High School and IUP. One of the pieces to be performed on the Fisher stage, “Wet Stones Full of Light” with music recorded by LeTrio Joubran, will combine the Koresh dancers with selected members of the IUP Dance Theater.
