Funeral director earns scholarship
Selected Independent Funeral Homes Educational Trust has announced it selected Joshua C. Starr, of Kittanning, as this year’s recipient of the Spring Management Summit Scholarship.
The scholarship provides full registration to the Spring Management Summit, an educational program designed to inspire and engage future leaders while honing and increasing their skills in funeral home management.
The two-day event is geared toward mid-level staff interested in learning about various management issues including human resources, finance and operations.
Starr serves as a funeral director at Bauer Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Kittanning, where he has been employed in that capacity since fulfilling his residency requirements at the firm in 2009. He has worked in funeral service, at least part time, since age 15 and received full licensing in 2010. Starr received his Bachelor of Science degree in funeral service and psychology from Point Park College and completed his mortuary training at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.
“I certainly appreciate scholarships such as this being offered to individuals who do not have an ownership interest in the businesses that employ them,” Starr said in a release.
To be eligible, applicants must be employed at a firm maintaining full membership in Selected Independent Funeral Homes and not be a majority owner of the firm.
