Friends of Yellow Creek will host the fourth annual Septemberfest from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28 at Yellow Creek State Park.

Events will be centered at the day-use area and the beach. Admission is free.

The celebration of the park will feature events and activities for all ages and tastes. Among the highlights will be guided kayaking tours led by park naturalist Mike Schaeffer. A dozen DNCR kayaks will be available for participants’ use, or visitors can bring their own.

Visitors can also enjoy free canoeing and paddleboating.

Several popular music groups from Indiana County will be sharing their music throughout the day, including Mu, J.R. Shanty Company and Grist for the Mill.

The day begins with a 9:30 a.m. mountain bike race. New this year will be arts and crafts vendors, who will offer stained glass, woven baskets, greeting cards, crocheted items, photographs and more.

Shaffer will provide kayak instruction and lead free tours at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Space in the kayak tours is limited; participants are encouraged to come to the park early in order to sign up.

For children, FOYC is pleased to be partnering with the Indiana County YMCA, which will be organizing free children’s games and activities between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Spectators will also have the chance to watch sailboat races. The IUP Sailing Club will be showcasing its fleet on the lake at 2 p.m.

“Septemberfest achieves two goals,” Friends of Yellow Creek co-chairman Ken Sherwood said in a release. “This celebration helps promote the park by bringing out visitors from across the county to enjoy this valuable commonwealth resource. The event also serves as FOYC’s primary annual fundraiser.”

The group uses all money raised through food sales, the races, and maps, as well as memberships, to enhance the park.
