Girl Scouts enjoy camp at Blue Spruce

For girls throughout the Indiana region, it’s Girl Scout camp season.

Last week, 150 Scouts are enjoying fun and friendship at a volunteer-led day camp at Blue Spruce Park. The camp features many fun activities, including hiking, songs, games, crafts and earning badges.

This day camp — as well as many other Girl Scout programs — would not be possible without the help of volunteers throughout the Indiana region.

Lindy Fails, a lifelong Girl Scout, first became involved as a volunteer after she graduated from college. “My friend’s daughter was in a Girl Scout troop that needed a leader,” she said, “so I stepped in.”

Now Fails is one of the volunteer directors at the Blue Spruce Day Camp.

She is a Girl Scout volunteer because she believes in the mission of Girl Scouts, and she enjoys watching girls grow into responsible young adults. “Girl Scouting is very beneficial to these girls,” she said. “It’s rewarding to see girls go on to do fantastic and important things.”

This year at day camp, Fails is helping girls learn important outdoors skills as well as showing them how to put the Girl Scout Law into practice. “We’ll cover a different part of the Girl Scout Law each day of camp,” she said.

She is also having fun with the girls.

“I tell people that Girl Scouts the only organization that — as an adult volunteer — you get to carry on like a kid.” Fails added. “It’s great fun.”
