Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Sociology of Family class, taught by Melissa Swauger, has organized events to mark Hunger Awareness Week, April 28-May 2.

Events are being planned in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Zion Lutheran Church. Nonperishable food items will be collected at all events and in the IUP Sociology Department office, 102 McElhaney Hall, during the week. All events are free and open to the community.

A screening of the film “A Place at the Table,” which explores hunger in America, will be held at 6 p.m. April 30 in the Hadley Union Building’s Delaware Room.

From 1 to 3 p.m. May 2, a poverty simulation will be held in the HUB’s Ohio Room, facilitated by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Volunteers will take on roles as members of low-income families, single parents and senior citizens getting by on Social Security and will be asked to provide food, shelter and other necessities while interacting with various community resource staff members.

Community members may volunteer for the poverty simulation by contacting Swauger at before April 30.
