Neva Stanger, of Cranberry Township, Butler County, was appointed for a two-year appointment as Indiana’s solicitor. She succeeds Indiana attorney Wayne Kablack who has done legal work for the borough since 1978 and has served as Indiana’s solicitor since 1983.
Jones said council had decided it was prudent to seek legal counsel outside the Indiana area to avoid conflicts of interest with Kablack as solicitor, especially in legal representation for the borough in pending litigations.
Two especially high-profile lawsuits involving the borough remain to be resolved. One is a 2012 challenge by the owners of Delaney Chevrolet Buick Honda, 625 Water St., to the monetary assessments levied under the borough’s Business Improvement District. The other is a legal challenge to the Indiana Borough Planning Commission’s approval in 2013 of a controversial high-density student housing project at 931 Oakland Ave.
Council hired Stanger last July to represent the borough as a special land use attorney in the dispute over the student housing project.
Jones said council met with Kablack before Monday’s reorganization and informed him of council’s intention to choose a new solicitor.
Because of the dangerously cold weather, this evening’s council meeting was canceled and rescheduled for Jan. 14.
