It's Christmas all year for shop owners

It begins to look a lot like Christmas long before the holidays arrive for the owners of All That Glitters, a Christmas-themed shop in Indiana.

The store is owned and operated by Indiana residents Ed and Lorraine Anderson and located on the upper floor of Anderson’s Fireplace Shop at 953 Ben Franklin Road North.

The couple thought the store would be a good fit for the Indiana area and their business, since they’re unable to sell fireplaces on the top floor of the building.

“We’re thinking about Christmas all year long,” she said. “We’re both really into ornaments and decorations. We thought it would be good to bring to Indiana County.”

Running All That Glitters is a full-time, year-round job for Lorraine, who has managed the store since it opened 13 years ago. She orders new merchandise every year starting in January and marks down some of the leftover inventory to 50 percent off. New products arrive beginning in May, and she spends much of her time during the offseason setting up displays and rearranging and dusting the merchandise.

Some of the most popular items include hunting and fishing decorations and more traditional favorites like the Elf on the Shelf, angels, snowmen and gingerbread animals. Customers have also been eager to try one of this year’s new products, fiber optic canvas prints and Thomas Kinkade tapestries.

“We try to offer things you wouldn’t see in big-box stores,” Lorraine said. “We try to buy country, some glitzy things for people who like sparkly bling, the hunter and lodge look and the traditional look.”

Though the shop gets busiest at the end of October and doesn’t slow until the holiday season ends, Lorraine sees customers throughout the year. She’s noticed an unexplainable spike in business in May.

“Maybe because of Mother’s Day,” she said. “I don’t really know.”

Regular customers often bring visitors from out of town, and she also sees families during visits to Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She attributes the success of the store to the “relaxing atmosphere” that helps her customers feel the Christmas spirit long before December arrives.

“I really appreciate our customers. Girls and boys that came with mom as a teenager are now bringing their children in, starting their own traditions. On Christmas morning, I’m thinking of all the people opening my ornaments. They’re why I’m here.”

All That Glitters is currently open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. After the second week in January, the store will remain open year-round from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
